If a few hours ago we were talking about the partial acquisition of FromSoftware, now we have learned that the publisher NetEasebased in China, has acquired the French developer Quantic Dream for an unknown number. It was in 2019 when an investment was made to take a minority stake. In fact, it has now been confirmed that despite the acquisition the studio will operate independently and will continue to be run by David Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumière.
In its day, the participation made three years ago in Quantic Dream allowed it to diversify into games for more platforms beyond making PlayStation exclusives. Now, under the full ownership of NetEase, the developer becomes the first study of the Chinese giant in Europe.
Quantic Dream would be developing another Triple A apart from Star Wars Eclipse: a medieval fantasy title
While Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls have been the studio’s last well-known games, it is currently working on Star Wars: Eclipse, although everything points to its release being years away. It should also be remembered that Quantic Dream now has an additional studio in Montreal.
The problems of Quantic Dream
Quantic Dream’s reputation took a nosedive in 2018 when reports of a supposedly toxic work culture. The studio sued the publications behind these rumors for defamation; last year, he won one case but lost another. In fact, co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière mentioned: “Everyone who is familiar with Quantic Dream, its management and our team knows exactly what to make of these allegations.”
“As a shareholder who had already audited our study at the end of 2018, who had evaluated all the material elements and had followed all the results of the litigation, NetEase had a very clear vision and could easily assess the absence of any material basis for these claims.. Therefore, they had no impact on our discussions.”
After the acquisition, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Quantic Dream. How many games will arrive in the next few years?
