The Madrid team from MercurySteam was in charge of bringing Metroid Dread to life, the latest installment of the Nintendo series in the classic 2D, and according to the latest reports, they would already be working on its sequel. Metroid Dread hit stores last 2021 alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch OLED, and it was all a hit with critics and audiences.
When asked if MercurySteam is currently working on the sequel to Metroid Dread, those responsible for the team they did not want to confirm it literallybut they have hinted that they would be moving in that direction.
A new 2D Metroid with a Spanish flavor
“Bueno, about the projects we are doing today, there is nothing I can say”, said Enric Álvarez, CEO of MercurySteam, in a recent interview with Gamereactor. “So a simple ‘no comment’ It will be enough”.
“All I can say is that José Luis is still in the studio. Period”, concluded the manager. We are talking about José Luis Márquez, director of the two Metroid games which has developed MercurySteam to date, Metroid: Samus Returns (Nintendo 3DS) and Metroid Dread.
In this way, although the team does not want to officially confirm that MercurySteam is already working on a new installment of the Metroid saga, it seems reasonable to think that José Luis Márquez and his team They could already be shaping the new episode of Samus in 2Dwith its platform levels, its bosses and everything.
Metroid Dread managed to be recognized as one of the best games in the 2D series thanks to its combat system and its polished gameplay (don’t miss our full analysis). We will see what the Madrid team comes up with to surprise again with this supposed sequel which could already be running. As to its releasethe logical thing would be to think that it will arrive in a few years, when Nintendo Switch 2 is already a reality.
