HERODARK MATERIALS
Despite the glut of cable channels to choose from, the good old lady has yet to snuff you out of your last vestiges of sanity. The good news is that she will likely be there to greet you when the hors d’ oeuvres hit the fan. The bad news is that she is a snob. Hence, the best way to avoid the pitfalls is to eschew televised wrath by enlisting the assistance of a trusted confidant. After all, you wouldn’t want to put yourself in a timeshare with your husband/wife or mate. That is, unless you are in charge of a corporate jet. Those who have the foresight to keep your hands clean will have a better chance of winning the lottery.
VERY RALPH
‘Very Ralph’ is a feature-length documentary about Ralph Lauren, and the first authorized film on the designer. Directed by award-winning documentarian Susan Lacy, it will debut on November 12 on HBO. It features interviews with the fashion magnate and his family, as well as rare archival footage.
Very Ralph has its fair share of the usual (and not-so-obvious) highlights, like the fact that the designer has been married for five decades and has a sports car collection to match. It also has a few of the more interesting bits, including a segment on the labor involved in making the company’s iconic shirts.
The movie will also cover Lauren’s childhood in the Bronx, his rise to fashion superstardom, and the various challenges he faced as a designer. It will also take a close look at the history of the Apollo Theater in New York City, as well as the upcoming 50th anniversary of Sesame Street.
ERNIE & JOE: CRISIS COPS
ERNIE & JOE: CRISIS COPS, a new documentary from filmmaker Jennifer McShane, follows two San Antonio police officers in a groundbreaking unit that diverts mentally ill people from jail to treatment. The film has received rave reviews from viewers.
After a screening at the Hot Docs Film Festival, the documentary was selected for the America ReFramed series at PBS stations across the country. It was also selected for the South by Southwest Film Festival’s special jury award and was chosen to tour internationally. The film won several other awards and was acquired by HBO.
The film follows the lives of Ernie Stevens and Joe Smarro, who are members of the San Antonio Police Department’s mental health unit. While they do not wear uniforms, they talk to people in crisis as equals and treat them with empathy and compassion.
CHUMEL CON CHUMEL TORRES
Using witty irreverence to highlight newsworthy events, Chumel con Chumel Torres has generated a lot of buzz amongst the social media set. It isn’t just about politics, however, as Torres has tackled global migration, pharmaceuticals, and religious sects. The show is currently airing, and will wrap up its fourth season on November 18. There are 30 episodes to date.
Torres has been racking up awards and accolades in the political satire department. Aside from his weekly shows, he has written for The New Yorker and Time magazine, and co-authored two books with fellow Mexican comedian Juan Carlos Lopez. He also hosts a webshow called El Pulso de la Republica, a tv show for kids that riffs on the popular “Pulse” series.

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER

It has won a total of 26 Primetime Emmy Awards, a handful of Producers Guild of America Awards, and a handful of other prestigious accolades. It has also been nominated for a whopping five Directors Guild of America Awards, which is no small feat. In addition, it has been named the best new television show in the US by Time Magazine, and ranked as the number three television program in the country by a Gallup survey.
