Associated Theatres (Lynchburg)

Associated Theatres (Lynchburg) owned a theatre in the city from 1945 to 1955. The theatre was built by Richard D. Apperson, who also owned the Lynchburg Traction and Light Company.

The city’s charter was broader than the state’s, and thus, it could authorize ordinances to prohibit obscene films from being shown in Lynchburg. It was also argued that the state had the monopoly in motion picture censorship. The court ruled in Shaw v. City of Norfolk, 189 S.E. 346, that the state had monopolized the motion picture censorship field.

Lynchburg lost a little of its flair when the Opera House closed, and hotels and restaurants began to see a drop in foot traffic. This led to the closing of a number of swimming pools, which were filled with earth.

The city manager was notified of the issue by the city council, and approved his decision. The city council approved the decision, but also approved an ordinance banning the showing of indecent pictures in the city.

Other rides include a Cheetah Chase 1700-foot track, a Thunderbird launched wing coaster, and two junior-sized water slides. The water park also features a children’s pool, and there is a family “tipping bucket”.

The park also offers live shows daily. There is an outdoor theater, and the Holidog’s All-Star Theater, which features Holidog and Safari Sam.
