App subscriptions have become much more common in recent years, and many Google Play apps also offer free trials. But if you no longer use your subscription or if you weren’t impressed with what it offered, you can cancel it at any time. Not sure how to do it through the app itself? You can head to Google Play instead. Here’s how to cancel a subscription on the Play Store.
How to pause a Google Play Store subscription
The first thing you should know is that canceling is not the only option available. If you’re short on money, in some cases, you can pause payment for one month and continue your subscription for the next. Only a few apps offer this, but it’s worth checking to see if they do. Here we explain how to do it:
Open Google Play on your Android phone or tablet. Check which account is currently open if you’re using multiple accounts or sharing the device with family members. Tap the menu button in the top left corner (three lines), followed by Subscriptions. Select the subscription you want to pause. Tap Manage. If the app offers this option, you’ll see Pause payments. Tap it.If you can select the period of time you want to pause. The only thing left to do afterward is to tap Confirm.
However, we should note that your subscriptions will be paused at the end of your current billing period.
How to cancel a Google Play Store subscription
Not satisfied with what your subscription had to offer? Then it’s time to cancel. Follow these steps to do it:
Open the Google Play Store app and make sure you’re signed in to the correct account.Tap the menu button in the top left corner, then go to Subscriptions.Find the subscription you want to cancel and select it.Tap Cancel subscription and continue on-screen instructions. You may be prompted to select a reason for cancellation. Choose one of the options and click Continue and then Cancel Subscription.
Don’t worry about wasting part of your subscription: you can continue using the app for the period of time you’ve already paid for or for the rest of your free trial. The same applies to annual subscriptions. If you signed up in March, for example, and canceled soon after, you’ll be able to continue using the app until March 2021. It won’t automatically renew after that.
What about refunds?
Subscription refunds are a bit more complicated than app purchase refunds. Generally, you should be able to get a refund within 48 hours of signing up. However, you will only receive money for the month you canceled. You may also need to contact the app developer directly, depending on the subscription service.
How to restart a Google Play Store subscription
Sometimes you need to pause or cancel subscriptions because they’re not convenient or you’re too busy to take advantage of them. The good news is that it is possible to reset them. So if you recently bought a new Fitbit and want to restart your Fitbit Premium subscription, for example, here’s how to do it:
Once again, open the Play Store app and go to the menu. Tap Subscriptions. If you recently canceled or paused a subscription, it will appear in the list. Tap it. Select Manage and then Resume. Your subscription will be reactivated immediately.
