Russian driver Nikita Mazepin was fired today by the Haas Formula 1 team, which has also decided to end its sponsorship of Uralkali, a Russian fertilizer company, the American team announced in a statement.
“The Haas team has decided to terminate the sponsorship with Uralkali and driver Nikita Mazepin’s contract with immediate effect. Like the rest of the Formula 1 community, the team is shocked and saddened by the invasion of Ukraine and wishes a swift and peaceful end to the conflict,” Haas said in a statement posted on Twitter.
For his part, Mazepin wrote on his social networks: “Although I understand the difficulties, the FIA’s decision plus my permanent willingness to accept the proposed conditions to continue were completely ignored and no process was followed in this unilateral step.” .
The driver arrived at Hass in 2021 and competed in 21 events as a teammate of German Mick Schumacher. The Russian pilot is the son of Russian millionaire Dmitry Mazepin, the main shareholder of the Uralkali group.
It is worth mentioning that Haas loses the team’s main sponsor in this way and will have to find a driver to take Mazepin’s seat immediately, since the last pre-season tests take place in Bahrain next week.
